MACULAR DEGENERATION

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a degenerative eye disease that may get worse over time. It’s known as the leading cause of severe, permanent vision loss in people over age 60 and it occurs when the small central portion of your retina, called the macula, begins to break down.

There are many recent macular degeneration treatment breakthroughs which inspire hope that someday we may see a cure to this disease. The Annan Retina Eye Center offers many promising treatments that can help patients, described below, depending upon the stage of disease progression.

What are the symptoms?

· Blurred or "fuzzy" vision

· Difficulty reading or seeing details in low light levels

· Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted

· Extra sensitivity to glare

What are the Treatments?

Here at the Annan Retina Eye Center, we can offer several effective eye treatments. If tackled early enough the  treatments may slow down the progression of the disease, together with recovery of vision loss. So, if you think you’re suffering from any of the above symptoms, please don’t delay in booking an eye examination.

Medications – Can be offered as a first line of defense for all stages of wet macular degeneration and works by slowing or stopping the growth of new blood vessels. The medications are injected into the eye every four weeks.

Photodynamic Therapy – This may improve your vision and reduce the rate of vision loss. How does it work? A drug is injected directly into a vein in your arm which then travels to blood vessels in your eye. A laser is then shone into your eye to activate the drugs and stop the leakage.
